"As separate individuals, we live in separate cultures haunted by the vague memory of an intimacy that we all share. Let us, all together, chase the very horizon of existence, the edge of understanding, the point at which new sensations, emotions, thoughts and ideas begin to emerge… and let us bring this intimacy alive." ~Alex Mero
“I see that many of you are sincere in your desire to fight injustice. In this respect, I’d like to tell you something important.”
Everyone was all ears.
“My friends, remember that when it comes to improving life on earth, there is something much more powerful and much more efficient than the will.”
Everybody was intensely curious now to know what important statement Nathan was going to pronounce!
“It has to do with understanding the world around us! Every action we undertake is dependent on that. If this understanding is rooted in the source of our thoughts and feelings, it will guide us well.”
Again Nathan paused a moment to let the meaning of his words be understood. Finally, a man in a suit asked him: “How do we know what’s at the source of our thoughts and feelings?”
“By reflecting on what our real motivation is,” Nathan answered, “For that, we need to ask ourselves this question: what is the ultimate goal that I’m trying to attain?”
Nathan paused for a moment and then continued with fervor: “I know that you’re questioning and wondering about the best strategy to employ in organizing events, but is every one of you deeply convinced of the real reason for these events?”
He paused again. The public was completely still, mesmerized by every word.
“Ask yourselves ‘what do I think is an ideal world’, and ‘how can I contribute to it’. These are the questions that if you spend enough time on them, will give you a deep understanding of things.”
Nathan stood up, and ended his speech with strong and poignant sentences, interspersed with long pauses, which had the effect similar to that of collective hypnosis on the listeners:
“Those who are truly looking for the good will recognize each other! They will feel a powerful connection between each other and will then be able to use their full potential! Their actions will serve as examples for others, and little by little, this will lead to a transformation of the world, until it finally becomes a welcoming and inspiring place for all!”
Truly, to change anything on the external, requires a change on the internal. Perhaps not a change, but an awareness of who we are and what matters above all, Love.
Being aware, brings peace and harmony, and that influences the outside. Our thoughts, our actions, our words become ones of Love and Peace, and that has the effect of inspiring others.
“Why is there so much incomprehension between people of different origins?” Nathan asked Songo.
“Because in general, we pay more attention to the differences and not the similarities,” Songo answered.
These words reminded Nathan that Adnan had said something along the same lines.
“Then how come you’re understood by everyone everywhere you go?” Nathan asked.
“To achieve that, you have to arm yourself with patience and learn how to inspire confidence.” Songo said.
Nathan imitated Songo’s way of talking.
“But how do you make yourself accepted by people who live differently and how can you inspire confidence in them?” Nathan asked.
“You see, Nathan, our conscious mind is but a small part of our psychic activities. It’s the subconscious which constitutes the greatest part. When you address someone, it is better to reach his subconscious.” Songo explained.
“How do you address their subconscious?”
“First you have to pass through the nets woven by mistrust. That’s what you just did by imitating my very particular way of speaking.” Songo said smiling.
That’s exactly what Nathan had done. He had familiarized himself with Songo’s distinguished style of speech and his use of unique metaphors. He knew that this was partly how Songo got attention for his messages by those he dealt with. He knew that it was necessary to listen attentively, ask the right questions, and use imagination.
“What’s the role of these nets of distrust?” Nathan asked next.
“They prevent information from reaching the subconscious.” Songo explained.
“Do you always succeed in getting through them?”
“I start by studying the body language of those I’m dealing with. I observe as many details as possible, and then I imitate them when I’m in their presence.” Songo explained.
“You imitate them?” Nathan asked intrigued.
“Sometimes what people see has more of an impact than what they hear.” Songo stated.
These words confirmed to Nathan the power of the visual.
“People get the impression that I am one of theirs, “ Songo continued, “And many think that if you behave like they do, than you must have been brought up the same way and therefore share the same worries.”
These lessons were precious to Nathan. He understood better about the visual influence of images in communication.
We all look differently, live differently, and it’s these differences we notice, and hence why there is so much misunderstanding and discord between people, between cultures. To really communicate with one another, it’s necessary to look beyond the differences and see the similarities, and once we focus on the similarities, we’re able to “get through” to one another. Because in essence, we are all the same, and acting and speaking from the heart will reach the inner core of that other person, and they will understand you. The real connection and understanding is from within oneself to another…
“The little streams as well as the big rivers all end up by joining at the sea.” Pablo answered.
Nathan noticed that Pablo had just used the same symbolism as Simon.
“How do we know when someone has attained a higher dimension?” Nathan asked.
“When they no longer question how to be happy; they then live in the dimension of the wondrous mystery!” Pablo stated.
“The wondrous mystery?” Nathan asked.
“In that dimension, the path that leads to happiness becomes more and more tangible, and each experience serves to bring further clarity.” Pablo explained.
“What do we experience exactly?”
Pablo looked at Nathan and then at the flames in the fireplace, and answered: “Like I said…the wondrous mystery!”
They don’t question HOW to be happy, because happiness is in their lives through living from the heart, from the wondrous mystery. It is a place of calmness, peace, and acceptance of life and all the wonders around; seeing life from a grander perspective. When we see life from its true source, happiness is just there… When I said “Place” it is not a physical place, but a vibrational place within you, in which all you see is beauty…. and all you feel is Love…
An old man, in his sleep, had a dream. He dreamt that he was walking alone in the desert. Looking behind him, he saw the footprints he had made throughout his life. He also saw another set of footprints parallel to his, which confirmed to him that someone had always been beside him, in moments of happiness, as well as in the unfortunate ones.” Adnan took another sip of coffee. “After a while, the old man, who was contemplating his life, noticed that in the hardest moments of his life, there were but one set of footprints, and he said to himself: it was precisely during those difficult times, when I needed the most help, that I was abandoned! A profound feeling of solitude and insecurity settled over him.”
“What happened next?” Nathan asked.
“A few instants later, the old man saw from afar, a woman who was carrying a child in her arms. ‘How strange,’ he thought, ‘what is this woman doing all alone in the desert?’ He rubbed his eyes and looked anew, but the woman had disappeared.”
“Did this woman really exist?” Nathan asked.
“The old man could not know with certainty, but the image of the woman and the child stayed in his mind. He got up and continued on his way, all the while thinking about her. All of a sudden, he understood the message, and he raised his eyes to the sky.”
“What was the message?” Nathan asked, anxious to know. Adnan continued:
“Just as the child had been carried by his mother, he understood that he too had been carried in the most difficult times of his life!” Adnan concluded: “Never forget to have faith in the creative power and be…”
“…careful in making incorrect interpretations!” Nathan finished the sentence, “You are right! In spending time with Pablo, I was able to see that he too had great faith in the creative power.”
“The creative power is equally a wondrous mystery.” Adnan concluded with a wink.
Speaking for myself, one of the points of this story is that we are never alone. Believing in the creative power, or higher reality, we know we are not alone. We are always being “guided”, but we have to be aware of this creative power to understand. There is never a situation in which we are totally helpless; always there is something there guiding our steps or helping us along. The other point, is to be open to and understand the signs which are given to you, to definitely interpret them correctly. And to interpret signs correctly, one must be aware of the creative power, in general, and within…
“What are your beliefs, Adnan?”
Adnan looked at Nathan a moment, then in a serious tone said: “I believe in the creative power.”
“Where is it found?” Nathan asked his attention alerted.
“Your question is equivalent to asking a fish in the high seas where water can be found! There isn’t anything where the creative power is not.” Adnan stated.
Nathan, looked towards the horizon, and allowed Adnan’s words to penetrate.
The next morning, they both woke up very early. After a breakfast of coffee and warm donuts, Nathan wanted to continue the conversation broached yesterday.
“When we see how the world is wonderful, it’s strange that not everyone believes in a creative power.” He said.
“We each experience the world as we were taught.” Adnan answered, “Those who do not see the miracle in the order which reigns over the universe do not admit the existence of a creative power.”
“In that case, they do not experience the world in its totality?”
“To experience the world in its totality, it is essential to believe in the creative power. Only that certainty can help us correctly interpret what we perceive with our senses.” Adnan explained.
There are many words for Creative Power, all meaning from our true Essence or Source, that which most people call God. How true it is that if you don’t believe in this Higher Source, then your experiences of life and how you view the world are very limited. The wonder and joy at the simplest things, or the “awe” you feel when looking at breath-taking scenery, would it have the same magic and wonder if you did not believe in such a Source? Would you not also be limited in your creativity and accomplishments if you did not believe in something Higher, with endless possibilities?
The sky was turning more and more crimson, as the sun began to descend. Nathan went back to the high dune to watch the sunset. Once there, he had an open mind to the power of the images. He remarked that he had overcome hunger and that he was in a state of higher awareness. He could now concentrate with ease, and felt at peace with what was waiting for him. Daylight was coming to an end, and the dunes were taking on the color of dusk. Nathan associated this phenomenon of nature with all his feelings. He not only felt in perfect communion with the sun, but equally with the whole universe. He perceived intensely the connection between all the elements of the universe, and of all as a whole. Feeling blissful, he lay down on the sand.
We are connected with everything and everyone, but there are moments where this connection is so clear! Where we can actually feel ourselves blend in to all that’s around. It is not necessarily a “feeling”, but more a state of Being, where we feel like we are the sun, the mountains, the ocean, the trees, everything, and the “feeling” is an immensely blissful one. These are the moments where we are truly in reality, and where we’re truly ourselves, our essence, …where we’re truly “aware”.
Nathan remembered what Adnan had told him about the power of images. He knew he had to discover the secret behind these shadows. Some of these shadows had made a point of presenting themselves to him, and therefore, there was significance to that. First there had been Curiosity, then Attention and lastly, Confidence. Nathan wrote down these names in his notebook and reflected on them for a while. It was clear that these names represented feelings. He picked up his notes again. Little by little, the words became clearer. These three feelings had personified themselves as autonomous Beings to introduce themselves to Nathan. The shadows were then feelings. They were the spiritual entities Rachid had told him about who accompanied all men. Nathan realized that what he had just experienced was simply an unusual vision that said much about human behaviour. He reread what Rachid had said: “In the end, we decide for ourselves which feelings accompany us.” Nathan understood now that we are always in the position to choose which feelings we allow to dominate us.
You CAN choose your feelings, and depending on what feelings you allow to dominate, you attract life events that “glory” those feelings. If you’re constantly in a state of worry, sadness, or loneliness, you attract the situations that will continue or even enhance those feelings. Whereas if you choose the more positive feelings such as confidence, calmness, love, then you attract the situations that bring about those energies even more. Of course there are situations that come our way that initially bring about the negative feelings, such as anger, and it’s fine to acknowledge and feel them, for that moment and that situation (within reason), but then you have the choice to either let those negative feelings continue taking charge, or not. The feelings you surround yourself with, in the long term, determine your personality, and determine the path you continue on in your life journey.
